The previous sections discuss how the supply of labour might be
influenced but it is also important to ask how demand will develop. There
are a number of factors which could significantly affect how this
might change in the medium term. In particular:
- will there be a flight to quality as unskilled jobs are exported to Eastern Europe and the Far East?
- and how will the split between the public and private sectors develop? Currently a fifth of workforce jobs is in the public sector. The
present Government is committed to increasing jobs in the health service, police and education which, if successful, will reduce the private sector pool.
