This website has been compiled to complement the standard ‘A’ level reference sources.
It is called ‘The UK Economy Explained’ because it is about (primarily) the UK economy,
its past performance and its current strengths and weaknesses. It focuses, therefore,
on the practical workings of the economy rather than the theoretical principles
of economics found in the textbooks.
What's Included
It is intended to give students an insight into contemporary economic issues and
an understanding of and access to the raw data used by economists and policymakers
on a wide range of topics. For those interested in pursuing a more quantitative
approach, long runs of raw data (back to 1960) are included as appendices to many of
the sections. For those who want to test how the ideas and concepts can be applied,
an econometric model is included, prepared by the consultants, Oxford Economics.
Acknowledgements
A full list of acknowledgements is contained in an annexe but particular thanks
are due to the Office of National Statistics and the Bank of England for allowing
the inclusion of their data. All the interpretation and any errors are, however,
entirely the responsibility of HSBC Bank plc.
